Bishop Justin Duckworth

31 March 2013

Described as the ‘most unlikely-looking Bishop in the country’, Justin has long dreadlocks, wears shorts and fluctuates between bare feet and jandals.

He has been at the cutting edge of Christian ministry to ‘the last, the lost and the least’ in Wellington for the last twenty-five years. Justin and his wife Jenny ran a home for ‘at risk’ teenage women for seven years before moving with their young children to Upper Cuba St where they lived amongst the street people. The family had transvestites living on one side, and prostitutes on the other. They then founded Urban Vision, an organization set up to run communities and ministries in Wellington areas where life can be a real struggle.

The couple continued to work with people often rejected by society and the church and established Ngatiawa, a contemporary monastery in the Reikorangi Valley.

Bishop Justin was ordained the 11th Bishop of the Diocese of Wellington in June last year.
