Ian Winson

02 June 2013

On June 4th 2011, Ian was working as an engineer for Watercare in the Auckland suburb of Onehunga when an explosion of methane blew him out of the tunnel, claiming the life of his colleague.

Ian’s injuries were extensive and resulted in both of his legs being amputated above the knees.

Until that tragic event, Ian had been a passionate fitness buff, competing in marathons, triathalons and completing an Iron Man challenge in 2003. Ian founded and regularly organised the Lydiard Legend Run over Auckland’s Waitakere Ranges named in honour of running coach Arthur Lydiard.

In spite of his injuries, Ian has continued to be an inspirational champion of running and fitness.

Ian lives in Auckland with his wife Katherine and their two children.
