Lorraine Downes

13 April 2014

In 1983, aged 18, Lorraine started working full-time as a model, and won the Miss Universe title later that same year. She spent the following 12-months travelling throughout the US and 25 countries around the world. After returning to NZ, she resumed her modelling career, before opening a model agency and grooming school in 1986.

Lorraine later had two children with her then-husband Murray Mexted. She managed to author a book and work as an image consultant, all while working full-time as a mother. In 2006 she came back to public prominence when she won Dancing With The Stars. In 2009 she married NZ Cricketer Marty Crowe.

The former beauty queen represents a host of charities, including Variety, the Child Cancer Foundation and The New Zealand Breast Cancer Foundation. She and her mother Glad are the faces of a new campaign aiming to educate older women about their breast cancer risk and the importance of continued mammogram screening.
