Max Cryer

11 December 2011

Max Cryer’s professional performing career began at Sadlers Wells Opera in London as tenor soloist in the British premiere of the opera “Volpone”. He soon was a career entertainer, performing in cabaret throughout America, as well as theatre musicals, recordings and hosting television programmes.

After touring the United States for ten years, he returned to New Zealand and began hosting television’s first ever live talk-variety show “Town Cryer”. After three years he then became a producer at TVNZ as the brains behind “Mastermind” and “University Challenge”.

Seconded by the government, Max directed all New Zealand entertainment at two world expos, (1988 in Brisbane, and 1992 in Seville).

A university graduate with an Honours degree in Language and Literature, Cryer returned to academic life in 1993, teaching English and Media Studies.

In 1999, he was contracted by EMI in London to co-ordinate the repertoire for Dame Kiri Te Kanawa’s CD of Maori songs. He has also published numerous books on language and history.
