Phil Gifford

Phil Gifford is a New Zealand sportswriter and broadcaster currently hosting Front Row, a rugby show on Radio Sport. He also writes a weekly column for the Sunday Star Times and is a contributing editor to North and South magazine.

In 1973, Phil started his writing career by creating a satirical alter-ego – the rugby obsessed ‘Loosehead Len’. He began to write newspaper columns under this name and continued on to write several successful books.

In the eighties, Phil moved in to television work, both writing and presenting. An interview with Billy T. James led to him writing for The Billy T. James Show for three seasons. The two men shared a similar sense of humour.

Phil joined Simon Barnett in hosting breakfast radio for over a decade. The two were known as ‘Si and Phil’ and had a huge share of the Canterbury audience.

After a total of twenty five years getting up early for breakfast radio slots, three decades of writing weekly columns, more than seventeen books, fourteen radio awards and a double win as Sports Journalist of the Year, Phil will surely have a lot to talk about this week on Real Life.
